I am sitting here in a coffee shop drinking matcha tea journaling to a beautiful prompt from Suleika Jaouad’s, The Book Of Alchemy and I realize I did it. I wished, I asked, I wrote it down and it is happening.
The universe being an amazing place where wishes and dreams can come true, has granted me a glimpse of my dreams. About a year ago I sat down to journal with a prompt that asked me to list out the top 20 words that encapsulated what I wanted most in my life right now and in the future - the things I craved, dreamed of, desired most.
Serenity
Peace
Community
Inspiration
Joy
The prompt asked us to choose the top five on our list and imagine what our life would look like, feel like, be with these things in them. What does serenity look like for me? How does it feel? What does a day filled with serenity look like?
And so I sat down to write. Serenity is presence, softness, peace of mind. Feeling supported, settled, loved, and held. Serenity feels like falling asleep on a cushiony bed with your favorite blanket softly encompassing you. Serenity is feeling grounded and centered not only on the outside but deep within. It is an inner knowing, remembering, recalling. It is the state of sweetness and flow within. It is intuition fully embraced.
Peace is a state of knowing. Peace is self love, self care, self confidence. Peace is saying I love you to yourself each and every day. Peace is the calm waters of a beautiful lake, still and reflective. Peace is feeling heard and seen and actually listened to.
Community is all about choice. I chose earlier this year to work on building relationships, creating more opportunities to share space with others. I chose to reach out, create opportunities, invite people to engage in activities that were new to me and also that were things I understood and enjoyed already. I sent more texts, more emails, called more people and just engaged. I invited people to paint rocks, drink tea and talk about books. I put myself out there and in response, people invited me more often and engaged with me more often than ever before. I built a supportive, loving, inspiring community that was and is shared.
Where does inspiration come from? For me, taking chances, exploring new things, stepping out of my comfort zone, doing/seeing/experimenting with new things that were challenging inspired me. Sometimes challenging, scary, new things can be inspiring because when you find yourself doing them, you feel so powerful. Inspiration is that sense of newness, excitement, awe that comes from taking a step into the unknown.
Joy is creating a life full of the things that are life affirming. Time with my family in crazy conversations, running away to a cabin in the woods with my spouse for five days to simply be and connect, a sound bath with my best friends followed by dinner and chatting, teatime savoring tea and talking books/philosophy/dreams/history with others in small personalized groups, time painting ANYTHING, writing down my thoughts and reflections and sharing them. This is JOY. Joy in every breath.
So in writing this all down, contemplating what these words meant to me helped me manifest them in my life. I put them out there. I let the universe know. I let myself know what I really, really wanted. And somehow I sought it out, I claimed it, I embraced it, I nurtured it. I made it happen.
Is my life perfect? Well no. But there are moments I feel so much presence and I realize that I am that much closer to making these things more and more a part of my life. I am closer to realizing what I want and making it happen. Life is a work in progress. My life is a journey full of twists and turns and wrong paths taken, back tracking, joyful skipping down fun pathways. And I am all in.
What are your top 20 words expressing what you want MOST in your life right now? Now take your top 5 (they will jump out at you) and write/reflect on what they mean to you, what a life with these things in it would look like and feel like and be. Be specific and descriptive. Imagine it fully, put it out there in the universe and invite these things into your life with open arms and an open heart.
